Dr. David McDonald, Ph.D., P.E., FACI

David McDonald

Dr. David McDonald became Managing Director of the Epoxy Interest Group of CRSI in 2009. As Managing Director, David is responsible for day-to-day operations of EIG including fielding technical questions regarding corrosion and concrete as well as promoting the benefits of epoxy-coated reinforcing steel. After graduating with his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering in Australia in 1991, David worked for Wiss Janney and Elstner Associates in their materials group. There he evaluated and researched many different materials, such as corrosion inhibitors, concrete additives and reinforcing bars. He worked on many structures including the collapse of a major bridge in Palau and led a team conducting site surveys for the Gatun locks in the Panama Canal. He led a $1.2 million project for the FHWA on the evaluation of corrosion resistance of reinforcing steel, developing new techniques and evaluating new materials.

Prior to joining CRSI, David worked at USG Corp, a Fortune 500 company, in development and research of building products. Whilst there he managed several different groups including the Cement Board, Analytical Chemistry and Industrial Products laboratories. One of his concepts led to USG being awarded with a Chicago Innovation Award in 2005. David also worked in an Innovation lab, where he worked with others in developing new concepts and ideas. Work at USG led to several patents. During this period he also attended the Kellogg Management Institute at Northwestern University.

David has been active in technical committees including ACI, NACE, ASTM and PCI. He is has been a Licensed Professional Engineer in Illinois since 1996 and was named a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) in 2004. In 1999 he was awarded the American Concrete Institute Young Members Award and in 1997 won the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI), Charles Zollman Award for a paper on the long-term durability of precast concrete.
